Mustafa Ahmed, MD

Mustafa Ahmed, MD, is an interventional cardiologist who treats heart valve and structural heart disease, which are conditions involving defects or damage in the walls, muscles, or valves of the heart. Dr. Ahmed is a leader in minimally invasive procedures to treat these conditions, specifically transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), the Mitraclip procedure, and paravalvular leak repair. He also is an expert in the use of 3D imaging to evaluate and treat complex structural heart disease, including accurate real-time guidance during structural heart procedures. Other areas of clinical expertise include managing acute pulmonary embolism and resistant hypertension. While Dr. Ahmed primarily is focused on patient care, he also is a scientist with years of experience in cardiovascular research. His early focus on mitral valve disease with National Institutes of Health-funded UAB researchers led to exciting insights on mitral regurgitation, and he has authored over 90 publications in leading journals. Dr. Ahmed received his medical degree from Victoria University in Manchester, England, and he held postgraduate positions at the Manchester Royal Infirmary and Queens Medical Center. At UAB, he completed his internal medicine residency, a general cardiology fellowship, and a research fellowship at in interventional cardiology. Dr. Ahmed has been in clinical practice since 2014.
